Sudan was the last male northern white rhino on Earth. He died in March 2018. He was captured in Shambe, Sudan by trappers in 1975 and was held in a Chechoslovakian zoo where he lived until 2009, when conservationists finally moved the last few remaining northern white rhinos to the Ol Petjeta Sanctuary in Aftica. There, they were under 24/7 armed guard to keep them safe from poachers. Sudan died of natural causes but without any offspring. The only hope now for the northern white rhino species is IVF (in vitro fertilization) with one of the last remaining females, otherwise this entire species will become extinct.
